During our time in Paphos, we visited the town where Zorba’s grandfather grew up, Kritou Tera, which turned out to be an amazing day that you can read about here.
Kings Tombs
We visited an archeological site of the Kings Tombs, that dated back to the 3rd Century BC.
Kato Pafos Archeological Site
Another interesting place was Kato Pafos, a UNESCO world heritage site situated next to the port close to the centre of Paphos. It was well worth the visit – in fact, Lonely Planet listed as the number one thing to do in Cyprus. The 2000-year-old ruins were lovely and the mosaics in the House of Dionysos and House of Theseus were quite incredible.
The most overrated tourist attraction
Aphrodite’s pool is where the Greek Goddess of Beauty came to bathe, and it was the place where she met Adonis. We drove for an hour or so to reach it, thinking we could swim in the same watering hole. When we arrived, it was stinking hot, I’m talking 36 degrees at 10am. We walked 200 metres or so to the pool and we were all so underwhelmed. It was a little watering hole, some nice trees, a trickle of a waterfall. No story board, not interpretive signs, nothing else there. Cyprus could do with some tourism development …
As it turns out, the closer baths, those of Adonis, are the ones where you can swim. Ah well. We continued heading north along the coast until we almost reached the border of Turkey-Cyprus. The views were incredible, really beautiful.
We found the most excellent seafood restaurant on a cliff in Pomos and enjoyed a Cypriot lunch of meze (pita, tzaziki, taramasalata), octopus, haloumi, calamari and a fresh Greek salad. Happy days.
The Kalalli Restaurant also has apartments too – worth considering if you want to stay in Cyprus off the beaten track. It’s about 1 hour 15 mins from Paphos.
