The Cyprus leg of the Zorbaletto’s epic adventure has been awesome. The villas we booked online, direct with the owner/manager, turned out to be awesome – two 3-bedroom villas next door to each other, each with a private pool. Big enough for ten of us. They were situated a few kilometres out of Paphos centre, which was a good thing. Paphos was just as we expected – big and touristy and filled with ‘Brits Abroad’ and loads of Russians. It makes me cringe when I see signs out the front of cafes and restaurants that promote full English breakfast with baked beans and eggs. No thanks. Give me yoghurt, honey and Cypriot coffee please.

From Meltemi Villas, the name of our place, we had a view of the ocean and the exceptional magical sunset that turned the whole sky orange.

The beach was 300 metres away and really, pretty crap. We didn’t even go swimming there. Mainly because we came across a sign that said ‘Public Toilet’ and pointed to the ocean. Eeeewwww.

Welcome

Upon arrival, we had the best welcome of anywhere I’ve ever stayed. A homemade spinach pie was waiting for us, along with big bowl of fresh cherries, local yoghurt, cheese, ham, orange juice, coffee, tea, milk, packet of pasta and jar of pasta sauce, and a six pack of Keo beer. Wow. The spinach pie – spanakopita – was absolutely delicious with great pastry and delicious filling loaded with feta.

The accommodation

The villas were really well appointed with every pot and pan we could want, a coffee dripolater machine, platters, utensils, you name it. Each bedroom has its own bathroom, the lounge had pay TV, and outside, we had a wood fired BBQ (not used), pool toys, and outdoor lounge and dining table. Fast wifi too.

You need a car to stay here. There’s supermarkets nearby and we preferred to stay away from the madness of Paphos, which is a huge town – more like a city. Meltemi Villas come highly recommended.
