The best thing about winter is truffles, and there’s no better way to enjoy truffles by hunting for them yourself. Hound & Hunter has opened up bookings early for Truffle Hunts and a Country Lunch in Manjimup, at Australian Truffle Traders farm in the heart of truffle country.
With the annual festival Truffle Kerfuffle scaled back this year (and last year), it’s time for truffle lovers to organise their own culinary weekend of wintery goodness.
The Hunt
I’ve been truffle hunting many times at Australian Truffle Traders and it’s always a delight.
Meet trained truffle dogs, walk between the oak and hazelnut trees to find truffles at the source, following the noses and tail wags of Gidgee, Max, Gunnah, Ruby and Malu.
The dogs are so clever, working hard for treats and praise from Gavin and Mel Booth, and their team of truffle experts.
Carefully brush away the soil, put the truffle to your nose and take a lungful of air, let the aroma envelope your senses. It’s addictive.
There’s nothing like digging up a prized culinary ingredient that’s worth hundreds of dollars. It’s something very few people experience.
Rare
We are blessed in Western Australia. The Southern Forests region is a perfect pocket that produces more truffles than the rest of the southern hemisphere combined.
The rare opportunity to unearth first-class quality truffles is only available for a few short months, starting in June and ending in late August.
Limited to small groups, the three-hour experience is led by Australia’s most experienced truffle growing family, the Booth family, owners of Australian Truffle Traders.
