Why I finally launched the publication I always wanted to read

I’ve been a Formula 1 fan for close to 30 years and a travel writer for 14. For most of that time those two parts of my life sat in separate drawers.

Not anymore.

I’ve just launched Away We Go, a Substack about Formula 1 destinations to help race rans discover the cities, the food, the hidden finds that make it worth staying after the chequered flag drops.

My first post is about something I’ve been thinking about for years: the average F1 fan stays just 4.5 nights at a race destination. In Melbourne, that’s barely more than the race weekend itself, and it’s a city worth at least ten days of your life.

I know this feeling well. My first Monaco Grand Prix happened almost by accident. A work trip fell through while I was in Italy. The race was ten days’ time and I booked it on a whim. We stayed on in Nice for the race and stayed longer to explore the area. We found a 12-seater bistro run by a Michelin-starred chef who’d quit fine dining to cook three simple dishes a day based on whatever was at the market that morning. It’s one of the best meals I’ve ever had. We never would have found it if we’d flown home after the race.

That’s what Away We Go is about. It’s about going beyond the track limits to turn a Grand Prix trip into something bigger.

And if you’re planning a trip to the Australian Grand Prix, my Melbourne travel guide is a good place to start.

And don’t worry, I’ll still be posting here on Travelletto, too.
